L'ouvrage s'intéresse à la représentation de l'américanité dans le roman contemporain. La troisième partie, plus pertinente quant à la diffraction, traite de la postmodernité et de la représentation de l'hybridité et de l'hétérogénéité dans les Amériques (« représentation postmoderne », petits récits, multiplication des voix narratives, enchevêtrement des discours, etc.).

« It is this atomized market of consumer goods that Jameson sees reflected in postmodern art, which offers a similarly atomized flow of unrelated images that, like the consumer market, lacks all unity and meaning. From Jameson's perspective postmodern art is not so much anti-representational - even though it certainly gives that impression - as it is non-representational because, without having that intention, it mirrors a radically differentiated reality that cannot be represented except in non-representational terms. » (p. 247)
« In much theorizing of postmodern literature the emphasis is on how postmodernism disturbs that balance and tips the scales towards reflexivity and away from representation, thus destroying whatever unity of experience was left intact in the early decades of the century. Beginning in the early 1970s and drawing upon earlier responses to contemporary art such as those of Susan Sontag, we have a tradition of formalist criticism that emphasizes postmodern self-reflexivity and indeterminacy. A good example is provided by the list of postmodern formal properties that David Lodge later in the decade publshed in The Modes of Modern Writing. Lodge sees postmodern fiction in terms of « contradiction », « permutation », « discontinuity » […] « randomness », « excess » and « short circuit ». » (p. 250-251)
