Intérêt : L’ « Alternate Reality Gaming » (ARGs) se réfère à un environnement de jeu qui n’est ni la réalité augmentée ni la réalité virtuelle, mais l’alternance entre des phases de jeu vidéo et des phases de monde réel (IRL). Initialement conçu à des fins de marketing, l’ARGs suppose la fusion entre un gameplay et un système textuel encyclopédique projetant une histoire transmédiatique complexe. Son intérêt réside dans son caractère éphémère : le jeu est la vie existent en parallèle et ni l’un ni l’autre ne peuvent être stoppés, sauvegardés ou rejoués. Cette caractéristique suppose un design particulier fondé sur trois éléments : l’exposition, l’interaction, le chalenge. La narration procède par fragments (par exemple rédigés sur de faux sites web accessibles par les participants, tandis qu’une plateforme centralise l’activité du joueur) mais aussi par interaction entre les joueurs (live chat et chat bot).

Analog Versus Digital - BUCKLEY, Jake, p. 7-10 : ★☆☆ (T)

Intérêt : L’article tire les conséquences théoriques du basculement de paradigme entre la société de l’analogique (qui « mesure ») et celle du digital (qui « calcule »). Ce changement, habituellement compris comme une rupture du continuum de la « sensation », est envisagé différemment par Gregory Bateson et Anthony Wilden, pour qui le passage de l’un à l’autre implique plus une continuité qu'une rupture. L'analogique est donc toujours une composante du digital ; deux autres chercheurs tirent des raisonnements similaire (Stiegler, Massumi), pouvant servir à l'analyse du rapport de l'homme au design du livre en contexte numérique.

Animated Poetry – BOOTZ, Philippe, p. 11-13 : ★★★ (T)

Contexte : L’article examine la question de l’ « animated poetry », en se focalisant sur le groupe L.A.I.R.E (Alire en français) fondé en 1988 par le poète hongrois Tibor Papp en France. Divers auteurs proclament que la « literariness » repose dans le langage et dans la relation qu’on entretient avec, notamment au travers des outils utilisés. L’ « animated poetry » est ainsi une nouvelle forme littéraire qui doit être lue sur son ordinateur (et non en public), puisque « both the program and its execution partake in the work » (p.12). Le groupe Alire aurait ainsi anticipé les modes contemporains de lecture de la littérature digitale.
Intérêt : Spécifiquement, le groupe Alire considère que toutes les réactions du lecteur font partie intégrante de l’œuvre, notamment la frustration (l’article parle d’ « aesthetics of frustration ») que celui-ci peut ressentir face à l’incapacité d’adopter un mode de lecture propre à l’ordinateur. L’article tente également d’intégrer la technique de l’animation comme une propriété esthétique de l’œuvre et non plus comme un genre à part. Est ensuite analysée la théorie avancée par le groupe Transitoire Observable (2003, France) pour lequel c’est le programme qui est l’œuvre, tandis que le résultat (le texte sur l’écran) n’en est que la simple exécution. La « literariness » est donc à considérer comme le rapport entre ce programme et le reste du « dispositif », et non entre le résultat et le dispositif.

Intérêt : L’article commence par pointer la confusion entre les termes d’art numérique (digital art) et « net art », ou l’art effectué sur internet – confusion problématique dès lors que le second type d’art implique l’existence d’un réseau. Roberto Simanowski remet ensuite en cause la définition de l’art digital donnée par le Routledge reader avant de placer la sienne, fortement liée à la notion de dépendance : est un art digital tout art qui dépend de la technologie digitale non seulement pour sa distribution mais également pour ses effets esthétiques; le « net art », quant à lui, est dépendant de la connectivité fournie par internet. Intérêt : Un article synthétisant le statut contemporain du terme « digital fiction » ou « fiction digitale ». Des auteurs comme Alice Bell rapporteraient le terme « digital fiction » à celui d’ « electronic literature », incluant donc la poésie. Selon la définition de Bell et Ensslin, « digital fiction is fiction, written for and read on a computer screen, that pursues its verbal, discursive, and/or conceptual complexity through the digital medium and would lose something of its aesthetic and semiotic function if it were removed from that medium ». L’idée de dépassement des seuls aspects du digital est abordé (n’entre pas dans la définition le simple texte digitalisé), et il est rappelé que le critère d’interaction avec le lecteur ne fait pas partie des critères définitoires de la notion. L’article rappelle également de manière judicieuse que les périodes esthétiques (par exemple modernisme et post-modernisme) peuvent s’appliquer à la fiction digitale. La plupart des auteurs excluent du terme les blogs, e-books, fan fictions et de manière générale tout ce qui peut-être qualifié de « communitarian digital fiction ».

Intérêt : Sous-genre d’ « electronic literature », la poésie digitale est également distincte de la simple publication web ou de l’écriture sur ordinateur. Selon l'article, Loss P. Glazier proposerait ainsi une perspective intéressante dans son ouvrage Digital Poetics, où il spécifie particulièrement que le poème est, si l’on puit dire, formé par la forme (voir extrait) : il parle ainsi d' « active formation ». L’article rappelle ensuite que le New Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics a cessé de tenter de définir la poésie, pour se rapporter dans sa quatrième édition à une simple généalogie du terme – preuve s’il en est que la question demeure irrésolue. Intérêt : Très pertinent. Un article évidemment généraliste mais qui permet de remettre en perspective relativement rapidement la plupart des enjeux autour de l’e-book. Comme le rappelle l’article, le terme « e-Book » associe le livre numérique (ou la « liseuse ») au livre traditionnel. L’article rappelle les débuts relativement lents de cette numérisation (le premier e-book, de Michael Hart, date de 1971), initiés notamment par le projet Gutenberg. Certains passages relatifs au design sont extrêmement pertinents (voir extraits), notamment en ce qui concerne les premières fonctions intégrant des traits caractéristiques du livre traditionnel, comme le changement de page avec animation – voir page 168). L’article traite également du passage vers des appareils dédiés, du Palm Pilot jusqu'au iPad). L’accent est particulièrement pointé sur la croyance destructrice que le contenant n’influe pas le contenu – que l’appareil sur lequel le texte est lu n’influe pas la lecture.

Intérêt : L’article rappelle l’aspect très voire trop générique du terme « electronic literature », chapeauté par l’ELO (Electronic Literature Organisation) et sa définition trop générale. L’auteur le compare donc avec d’autres termes afin d’essayer de définir au mieux un contenu. Il est assez rapidement précisé que la question est celle de l’apport essentiel de l’ordinateur au travail littéraire (non pas donc du simple traitement de texte). Cet apport pourrait permettre de conserver une définition très large de la littérature numérique tout en se focalisant sur sa spécificité, bien que celle-ci ne soit également pas définie. Par exemple, la définition de 1965 de Ted Nelson de l’hypertexte (« a body of written or pictorial material interconnected in such a complex way that it could not conveniently be presented or represented on paper ») s’applique ainsi à n’importe quel type de littérature électronique et illustre bien les problèmes de confusion entre les termes. L’article pointe également l’intéressante tension entre la communauté de la littérature hypertexte et celle de la fiction interactive – rappelant l’anecdote selon laquelle certains membres de la première communauté auraient inscrit au cours d’un évènement « This is not a game » sur des tee-shirts dédiés, traduisant une volonté certaine de demeurer ancré dans la tradition littéraire. L’article conclue en signifiant que l’incapacité de l’ELO à définir clairement l’ « electronic literature » en est l’aspect le plus fondamental : l’aspect expérimental de cette forme d’art, qui n’est pas encore ancrée dans une forme commerciale et une logique de marché, ne saurait se concrétiser autrement.

Hypertextuality – ENSSLIN, Astrid, p. 258-265 : ★★☆ (T)

Synthèse : Utile si besoin est - l’article rappelle les principes généraux de l’intertextualité – notamment son origine, théorisée par Theodor Nelson en 1965, ainsi que le lien avec le concept de « Memex » ou « Memory Expander » théorisé par Vannevar Bush (des liens avec l’expérientialité pourront sans doute être faits à cet endroit) et enfin le concept de rhizome. L’article focalise ensuite sur les deux principales écoles théoriques relatives à l’hypertexte – L’école du « Storyspace » (« Afternoon, a story » de Michael Joyce par exemple, mais aussi David Jay Bolter), très ancrée dans le post-structuralisme, et l’école de l’HyperCard (dont fait partie « Uncle Buddy’s Phantom Funhouse » de John McDaid). Est ensuite décrit le passage de l'hypertexte à l'hypermédia, puis au cybertexte.

Synthèse : L’article rappelle que le concept d’immersion, bien qu’utilisé généralement dans le domaine des jeux vidéos, peut également être usité pour les livres, les films, etc. Le concept et sa définition sont toutefois largement débattus par la critique et il n’existerait pas de définition précise – l’article en explore toutefois quelques unes. Les distinctions entre les deux types d’immersion (dans le jeu et dans l’histoire) semblent cependant différenciées assez communément. L’article focalise ensuite sur la proposition de Jan-Noël Thon (également auteur de l’article), de distinguer entre 4 types d’immersion : l’immersion sociale, narrative, spatiale et ludique. Très utile pour la recherche sur l’expérientialité.

Synthèse : Article relatif aux « i-docs » ou « interactive documents », autrement dit les documents dans lesquels l’utilisateur doit disposer d’un certain degré d’agentivité. Le type d’agentivité, d’action du lecteur sur le document, qualifiera selon l’article le genre auquel l’i-doc appartient, provoquant une avalanche d’appellations par la suite réduite à une taxinomie fondée sur la dimension d’interactivité. Les i-docs seront ainsi « passive adaptive », « active adaptive », « immersive » ou « expansive ». Pertinent pour travailler le modèle d’interactivité du livre en contexte numérique.

Synthèse : Cet article relatif aux drames interactifs examine particulièrement la question de l’autonomie des agents dans les drames interactifs. Selon cet aspect, il semble plus particulièrement intéresser le secteur du jeu vidéo. Il est peu probable qu’il soit utile autrement que pour sa dimension prospective, d’autant que la date du travail cité (Mateas et Sterne, 2002) risque une certaine obsolescence. Peu pertinent pour le projet.

Synthèse : La Fiction Interactive vise à décrire les histoires qui permettent au lecteur d’altérer la présentation ou le déroulement d’une narration – le terme sert tant les jeux vidéos que les formes plus hybrides de littérature. L’article précise une distinction utile entre la Fiction Interactive et de la littérature hypertextuelle ou des « choiced based narratives », mais également des logiciels Chatterbots ou de la poésie interactive. Selon Andrew Plotkin, un des aspects définitoires de l’Interactive Fiction serait l’impossibilité pour le lecteur de connaître la totalité des combinaisons narratives (voir extrait). Le champ est majoritairement tourné vers la Fiction Interactive d’aventure, des années 80 aux années 90 – aspect intéressant, la possibilité d’une unicité de l’autorité est pointée (contrairement aux jeux vidéos) tout comme l’absence de pression financière du champ (permettant des incursions créatives plus audacieuses que dans d’autres champs). Les apports initiaux de Katherine Hayles sont pointés (le retour vers la matérialité), puis est examiné l’intérêt de la recherche de Matthew Fuller (dans sa dimension socio-politique), d’Anna Munster, de Frances Dyson et de Matthew Kirschenbaum (leurs sources ont été ajoutées à la recherche).
